I am an internationally award-winning photographer based in Washington, DC. I have been an image-maker since I was given an SLR camera, a manual Nikon, on the eve of my first overseas trip to Egypt, in 1991. I learned exposure and focus on a TWA flight over the Atlantic, pouring over the well-written Nikon guide by the dim overhead in the dark airline cabin. In the bright light of the Sahara I made my first real exposures and waited with baited breath, drinking espresso and smoking Cleopatras outside of the kiosk as the rolls were processed. And just like that, I was hooked. Since then I have lived and traveled in many places, and my photographic style has expanded with every direction that those journeys have taken me. Graduating from the University of Alaska with a degree in History and Archeology, it is no surprise that I found jobs in my field difficult to secure. So much for following your passion! But the Business degree was never for me. After bouncing around the West coast for a year or two I eventually, in a fit of desperation, boarded a one way for South Korea with the idea of teaching English and finding adventure. Landing with a meager $300 in my pocket, I managed to find within the bustling millions of Seoul both a grounding and the love of my life. Through it all, photography has remained largely a hobby for me; serving as both a distraction and a soul rejuvenation. Great mentors have come and gone, styles have burned bright and then faded. I have been fortunate to discover some modest success with my work in publications and exhibition, but continue to find that the freedom to photograph anything I want, just the way I wish, is priceless. To quote one much more astute than I: “Art is purposefully useless.” I hope you enjoy the images I’ve presented here, and welcome your inquiry. Best to you, Kevin Davis |
