Environmental Portraiture

Environment is a big part of what makes a portrait. The place, the context, is often the only real information we have with which to discern the character of the person photographed. Who are they, what do they do, what should I feel about them? The environment tells us what we need to know.

I like expansive images. Big, bold, cinematic images that have the weight of emotion; a touch of romance and depth. I have always liked to compose with a good deal of negative space included, and I find it difficult to photograph people in a horizontal format without including a good deal of the environment in the photograph. With that in mind, these are images in which I feel the environment has effectively told the story of the subject.
