Holmes Run
Holmes run is one of many small streams that course through suburban Northern Virginia and into the larger waters of the Potomac River. The stream runs near my office, and I often picnic at lunchtime on Pre-Cambrian rock outcroppings that predate the dinosaurs, watching and listening to the cool clear water pass by.
Like all waterways in this region, it is a part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and as such the health of Holmes Run and streams like it are integral to the larger health of the Bay.
Holmes Run is an interesting look at the changes of urbanization in a small-scale environment. At one end of the stream I know, trout spawn in the crystal clear waters near the Barcroft dam, where Holmes Run has the picturesque look of untouched beauty one usually associates with the deep and hidden woods of New England. Just a mile downstream, the waters are soiled by oily pollution as it passes through long sewer-like chambers under I-395, marked with gang graffiti and littered with discarded tires and broken glass.
